Frequently asked questions

Who needs to pay advance tax?
Anyone whose estimated tax liability for the year, after TDS, exceeds ₹10,000 — this commonly applies to freelancers, business owners, and those with significant capital gains or rental/interest income beyond salary.
What happens if I miss an instalment?
Interest under Sections 234B and 234C applies on the shortfall — paying late or underpaying an instalment has a real, calculable interest cost.
Can my estimate change during the year?
Yes — you can (and should) revise your estimate at each instalment based on actual income so far, rather than sticking rigidly to a single estimate made in April.
